Found with her FOOT CHEWED OFF!

Spunky with chewed off foot...bless her little heart.

Bless her little heart.

 Saturday July 12, 2008 - the beginning
We got a phone call yesterday about this sweet little puppy that was found starved, dehydrated, full of hook worms & her foot was CHEWED OFF! She was found by the owner of a house where the renters moved suddenly and left junk piled on the curb. [probably Meth heads] The weird thing was she had no foot but had on a flea collar. Go figure. We have no real clue how she lost her foot. I am thinking that she may have got it caught in a big rat trap & chewed it off herself. But that is just a guess. Only God knows for sure.

Dr Gullett, with Northgate Animal Hospital, said there was no way the leg could be saved & she would be better off with it amputated at the hip. That way she would not try to use what was left.

We named her Spunky because the vet techs said she came in barking and wanting to play. She was getting around quite well on 3 legs!! Although she is about 10 weeks old she only weighs 8 lbs.

She has been started on IV fluids, pain meds, vaccinated, spayed and leg amputated late yesterday afternoon. She is still drowsy this morning and will start her medication for the hook worms. Of course she will be started on heartworm and flea prevention.

Dr. Gullett said she will have stitches and wear the e-collar for 2 weeks and then be good as new, just with 3 legs! That's a pretty quick recovery for amputation. But she is young and full of spunk.

If you know of anyone wanting to foster, here locally of course, please send them our way.  Either for Spunky or any of the other needy dogs we have listed.

The estimated medical expense is $350 which includes amputation & spay surgery, e-collar, worming, vaccinations, IV fluids, antibiotics, pain meds and hospitalization. Follow up care will, no doubt, be a little more.

If you can spare a dollar or two, please donate by clicking either the Chip in or Donate  button here on this webpage. Please leave your mailing address so we can thank you!!

You can also donate directly to Northgate Animal Hospital. Remember to tell them Dogs 2nd Chance/Spunky and leave your name and mailing address. I will want to personally thank you for your help. Please donate to help Spunky

Saturday July 19, 2008  Good news regarding Spunky! She is recovering well from the surgery to amputate her stump and goes to her new home for a trial adoption on Monday, July 21st. We feel it is a good fit and our darling tripod girl will have a new sibling to grow up with.

Thanks to all of you, Spunky's surgery expenses have been paid, thank to your donations! Of course any donations for her follow up care are greatly appreciated. She is on her way to a wonderful new life.

Updated pictures coming soon!!
Spunky also made the local news! Hopefully we made the point that Neglect or Abandonment is ABUSE!

Spunky at home with her new sister Ellie Good News! Spunky has settled in her new home quite well. She and her big sister Ellie, an 8 month old Australian Shepard mix, love to play. Ellie has toned down her rough play a notch so she doesn't hurt her little sister Spunky. She lets Spunky eat and drink first and even holds the doggie door open for her with her nose!! And Spunky is really enjoying her new routine of playing, eating, sleeping and getting loved in her new home.

Spunky relaxing on the cool tile in her new home.

Spunky's human parents Amie & Pete really love her as an addition to their family and they've promised to keep us supplied with pictures & a video soon.  Thanks to all for your thoughts and prayers for Spunky. A special thanks to Richard, Laura, Rhonda, Chester, Amy, Elizabeth, Susan, Melinda, Lisa, William, Lori, Carol, Shannon and Linda for your monetary donations.

Please Don't Forget All Our Other Medically Needy Dogs!   Especially MoonPie and Buddy II who are recuperating from their heartworm treatments. Both will be available for adoption soon and Buddy needs a quiet foster home.

Donations are greatly appreciated for our mounting medical expenses.
