Severely
Neglected Puppy Gets Medical Care & A Foster
Home
|
|
Mon
June 9, 2008
We found tied to our vet's door was cutest black
and white young dog in absolutely deplorable
condition. Not only was she covered in maggots,
she was starved almost to death, filled with
infection and could not
walk on her own.
Dr
Tracy Gullett, who assured us this precious girl
has not been used as a bait dog, went on to
state that, "This is the worse case of
neglect I have ever seen. But she just had too
much will to live to euthanize. If any dog
deserves a 2nd chance it is this little girl
we've named Moon Pie."
Dr.
Gullett and her staff worked with her Monday and
performed much needed tests. She is heartworm
positive, possibly needs a blood transfusion,
infested with hookworms and COMPLETELY
emaciated. Dr. G said she should weigh AT LEAST
40lbs she only weighed 23.
Moon
Pie is so sweet and so very grateful! She has a
long road to recovery but has an extreme will to
live.

Moon Pie is rapidly improving. She is eating
very well & won't need a transfusion after
all. The vets have been giving her daily Capstar,
antibiotics, and medicated baths for the Maggots.
( All the maggots & their eggs
are now history.) She has been treated for the hookworms
also & her stools are firming up well.
Moon
Pie has gained 5 pounds since she was abandoned
here 5 days ago. Up to 28 lbs from
23! It is amazing what a little love,
attention, food and frresh water can do!! Although her
ears are still very tender, they are not raw
like the were.
Dr
Gullett will vaccinate her the 1st of next week.
We'd
like to get her out of the vet's office and into
a foster home so she can gain
weight before going through heartworm treatment.
She will need to be inside for her recovery. She
surely doesn't need anymore flies laying more
eggs on her ears!! With this heat it doesn't
take long for the little varmints to hatch!!
We
just need a special, loving foster home for her
road to recovery. If you or someone you know can
foster Moon Pie, please send them our way. If
you can not foster for the whole recovery
period, a few weeks would get her out of the
hospital until another foster is found. Short
term foster would help tremendously! We can
furnish a crate & food if necessary.
Thank
you to all who have donated towards her medical
care. Please spread the word so we can
find her the loving foster she deserves!

Moon Pie is is still showing rapid improvement.
Her blood count is rising to near normal. She is
gaining weight and received her 1st vaccinations
this week.
Sadly,
we have not found a foster home for her. We have
had only 3 inquiries & 2 did not return
phone calls. I have 11 dogs at my house, and she
really needs more individual attention than I
can give. A home with cats, dogs and older kids
would be fine, as she needs socialization. She
does need to be inside, due to the heat and
flies. We DO NOT want anymore maggots. If you
could open up your heart and home to her, she
would be forever grateful.
Please complete a foster application if
interested.

Exciting news! Our little Moon Pie goes to
her foster home tomorrow where she'll have her
own room with AC and cable TV and all the love
she could want. We begged and pleaded and now
have a new foster family that has answered our
prayers....and Moon Pie's.

Moon Pie
has adjusted happily to her new life in foster
care. She gets along well with her new sisters, an older Rottweiler and a Pit Bull. She and Little Bit, the Pit Bull, are playing well together. She is eating well and her ears are healing nicely. Although she has her own private room, she loves to go outside and play.
Her foster family reports that sometimes its
hard to get her to come back inside. She is a happy dog,
perhaps for the first time in her life.
Moon
Pie will rehabilitate for several weeks before going through heartworm treatment She will also be spayed before adoption.
Wed
July 2, 2008 Moon Pie loved her follow up visit with the vet. They couldn't even believe it was the same dog! She's gained so much weight and was so happy and playful, they couldn't help spoiling her!
Definitely on her way to a great recovery!
New photos!
July 19, 2008
MoonPie arrived at the Vet's office Tuesday afternoon to begin her heartworm treatment the following morning. To everyone's amazement she weighed in at a whopping
39.8 lbs! Remember less than 6 weeks ago she was skin and bones at
23lbs. Kudos to her great foster parents!! She received her 2 treatments, has been monitored for negative reactions and returns to her foster home today. She will spend 4-6 weeks quietly recuperating while the medicine rids her of heartworms. She will then be begin her new journey in life, happy, healthy and
looking for a loving new home.
Updated
photos coming soon. Donations for her continuing medical care are greatly appreciated.

Our
Policy Regarding Owner Surrender and
Strays
We
are filled beyond capacity and have made
the difficult decision not to take in
any more animals at the present time.
However,
we'd be happy to help you re-home an
animal in need if you are willing to
continue caring for your pet (or a stray
you've found) until a suitable new home
can be found, please Email
Us. We'd be happy to help. This
is much more agreeable to us than seeing
your beloved family member go to a
shelter.
If
the animal absolutely HAS to be placed
right away, please refer to the larger
rescues in the Mid South for help. |

Who We Are
|
Dogs
2nd Chance is a non profit dog foster
group founded in the fall of 2007. We
are not a shelter. We are a group of
VOLUNTEERS that saw the need to help
medium and large dogs find new permanent
homes.
The
majority of our dogs were abandoned,
dumped or stray. Mostly all they needed
lots love, attention and a little
medical care. We also save dogs from the
urgent lists of "kill"
shelters as space allows.
We
are a VERY SMALL group trying to save
one dog at a time. Volunteers and
temporary foster homes are welcomed.
Funding
is our biggest challenge. We receive NO
federal, state or municipal funding. Our
biggest expense is veterinary services.
In addition to spay and neuter, several
of our dogs are going through or have
been through expensive heartworm
treatment. This is a hardship for us as
well as the dogs since we rely solely on
donations. Whatever else is necessary
comes out of our own pockets.

Please Help Us Save Just One Dog.
..just one...
If we all do that, we can work miracles!
|
|
Dogs
are not wild animals and can not survive
alone. They can starve, be shot by annoyed
neighbors or be hit by a vehicle and left
to die slowly. Please help us help them! |
